- Over 4,000 Czechs have expressed their ideas of what freedom is; they mostly say that it is enough to have the freedom of thought
- According to Petr Sabach, author of the books on which the popular Pupendo and Sakali leta films were based, freedom is inborn to people
- Winners were presented their prizes today
Prague, 10 September 2004 - Out of more than 4,000 people who contributed to the "Freedom is when?? competition, the jury has today selected the final 20 winners. Pavel Gunka from Ostrava won the top prize, a free one-year internet connection via the GPRS Unlimited tariff from T-Mobile and the IBM ThinkPad T41 notebook with the T-Mobile Option Globetrotter data card. This is Pavel Gunka's idea of freedom: "If you've experienced freedom, then you must have experienced constraint.?
The "Freedom is when?? project was prepared by T-Mobile in cooperation with the Czech representation of IBM and selected media. Its purpose was to explain the difference between fixed and mobile internet connections, the central element being the website at www.volnostjekdyz.cz. On this website, people could express their ideas of freedom. The twenty best ideas were then selected by the jury which included, for example, Petr Sabach, the author of the books on which the Pupendo and Sakali leta films were based, Monika Pavlickova, Marketing and Communications Director of IBM Czech Republic, and Marek Lutonsky, editor-in-chief of Mobility and www.mobilmania.cz magazines.
"Although the attractive prizes certainly played a part in motivating the participants, more than twenty thousand visitors to the special website and over four thousand of those who expressed their opinion clearly show that the idea of freedom is still topical for Czechs,? comments Jiri Hajek, spokesman for T Mobile.
"Freedom is a quality, something without borders,? Petr Sabach comments. According to Sabach, freedom is deeply embedded in people's minds. Whenever people have to deal with troubles in their lives, it is freedom that helps them overcome obstacles.
"I didn't want to compare freedom to anything as the other people did,? the overall winner Pavel Gunka explains. "I wanted to think about who can actually experience the feeling of freedom.? The surprised winner travelled from Ostrava to receive the prize and though he says he has several PCs at home, he does not have a single notebook yet.
The aim of the "Freedom is when?? project is to show that with a mobile connection to the internet, it is possible to send e-mails and browse the web not only at home, sitting "at the socket?, but basically at any place in the Czech Republic and abroad. "Mobile technologies are making significant progress and so in a few years' time, a fixed connection to the internet will be useless in most cases, similarly to the current development in the area of fixed telephone lines. As early as at the end of this year, we will, for example, offer customers connection via the EDGE technology, which is several times faster than the standard dial-up internet connection. By the end of next year, we will launch the UMTS technology, allowing speeds even several times higher, comparable with ADSL. When we have such opportunities, there is no longer any reason to bind oneself with wires to one place,? says J. Hajek.
According to Monika Pavlickova, Marketing and Communications Director of IBM Czech Republic, the increasing availability of notebooks helps penetration of the mobile internet. "Only a few years ago, a high-quality notebook was considered something that only companies and rich people could afford. Today, the prices of notebooks are approaching those of desktop PCs. For example, our IBM ThinkPad R can be obtained for prices starting at approximately CZK 31,000,? M. Pavlickova comments. The sales figures confirm this statement. According to M. Pavlickova, notebooks are becoming widespread in homes and thanks to the lower prices, it is often young people and students who buy them, as the internet is now an integral part of their lives.
The first prize in the competition was the IBM ThinkPad T41 notebook with the T-Mobile Option Globetrotter data card and a free mobile internet connection for one year. The second and third prizes are a T-Mobile MDA II and a T-Mobile Option Globetrotter - all of them again with the T-Mobile Data Unlimited tariff for a whole year free of charge. A further 17 winners were awarded a SIM card with the T-Mobile Data Unlimited tariff for three months free of charge.
Participation in the competition was not conditioned by any purchase of goods or services.
