Prague 25 December 2008 - This year's statistics on the Christmas traffic in the T-Mobile network again confirm that the mobile phone remains one of the most favorite communication tools. Compared to the last year which saw a slight stagnation in terms of the volume of traffic on the Christmas Eve, this year registered an increase in all observed indicators. SMS remain to be the most favorite means of sending Christmas wishes to our loved ones: T-Mobile customers sent nearly 28.2 million text messages, which is an increase of 4.9%. Unlike last year, when most SMS were sent in the morning hours, this year T‑Mobile customers were sending them throughout the whole day. The number of sent MMS messages also rose, by more than 11%. The overall number of calls rose slightly to 16.5 million calls.
Compared to the last year, people made more calls on Christmas Eve - the total number of incoming and outgoing calls was almost 16.5 million, which is a more than 2% increase over the same day last year. Out of this number, more than 9 million calls were made by T-Mobile customers. The heaviest voice traffic was registered thirty minutes earlier than last year - between 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., when approximately 1.5 million calls took place. A higher traffic was registered also between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., when people shared their impressions of the Christmas gifts.
The number of sent SMS grew by more than 4.9%. Customers sent a total of almost 28.2 million text messages from their mobile phones. Compared to the last year, we saw a significant change in the customers' habits - while in the previous years people sent most SMS between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m., this year they were sending text messages throughout the whole day. The busiest quarter of an hour was the period between 1:15 p.m. and 1:30 p.m., when 719,000 SMS were sent.
Multimedia messages experienced the biggest growth this year again: While in 2007 more than 184,000 messages were processed by the MMS centre on Christmas Eve (sent from mobile phones, external applications or over the internet), this year more than 205,000 such messages were sent, which constitutes an increase of 11.53%. Most multimedia messages were sent between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. (more than 15,000 MMS).
